Khan Shatyr Entertainment Center, Kazakhstan - The world's tallest tensile shade shelter
The Khan Shatyr Entertainment Center officially opened last night at the grand ceremony attended by President Nazarbayev and the head of state. The effect of Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli coincided with the President’s birthday and Astana Day. The centre is an important new citizen, cultural and social place for the Astana people, bringing together a wide range of activities in a protected climate envelope to provide a comfortable environment all year round.
The tent-type cable net structure is located at the northern end of the new city axis, 150 meters from the elliptical base, forming the highest peak of the Astana skyline. The modern tensile structures construction occupies more than 100, 000 square meters in an ETFE dome, with views of the city and the grasslands in the distance. It includes a city-sized park and a variety of recreational and leisure construction, including retail stores, cafes, restaurants, cinemas and flexible spaces to accommodate a variety of events and exhibitions. Different levels form an undulating terrace, and the top terrace forms a water park.
The temperature in Astana can drop to -35 degrees Celsius in winter and +35 degrees Celsius in summer. The three-layer ETFE enclosure is designed to block enclosed homes from extreme weather and allow daylight to clean the interior. In winter, key challenge is to prevent ice from forming inside the envelope. This is achieved by temperature control and directing the hot gas flow onto the inner surface of the fabric, which also prevents degradation. In the summer, sintering on the outermost foil layer provides shade. Internally, low-level injection directs cold air through the space, while opening the vent at the apex causes stacking effect ventilation.
